Description

Author Sam Tanenhaus, former editor of The New York Times Book Review, will visit the Ferguson Library to discuss his biography Buckley: The Life and the Revolution That Changed America. The conversation, part of the ongoing Civility in America Series, will be moderated by John Breunig, Editorial Page Editor with Hearst Connecticut Media Group. The event will be held at the Main Library, DiMattia Building Thursday, August 7 at 6 p.m.

Buckley, an account of the life of William F. Buckley, Jr., vividly captures its subject in all his facets and phases: founding editor of National Review, the 20th century’s most influential conservative journal; syndicated columnist, Emmy Award-winning TV polemicist and bestselling spy novelist; ally of Joseph McCarthy and Barry Goldwater, mentor to Ronald Reagan, and game-changing candidate for mayor of New York.

In the biography Tanenhaus also uncovers the darker trail of Buckley’s secret exploits, including CIA missions in Latin America, dark collusions with Watergate felon Howard Hunt, and Buckley’s struggle in his final years to hold together a movement coming apart by the AIDS epidemic and the invasion of Iraq, even as his own media empire was unraveling.

Tanenhaus is also the author of the national bestsellers Whittaker Chambers: A Biography, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, and The Death of Conservatism. His feature articles and essays have appeared in The AtlanticThe New YorkerThe New York Times MagazineVanity Fair and other publications in the United States and abroad.

A book sale and signing by Elm Street Books will follow the presentation.

The Civility in America Series is presented in partnership with The Dilenschneider Group and Hearst Connecticut Media Group.
