"Suite for Africa": Amina Figarova Sextet featuring the Matsiko World Orphans Coir
The Matsiko World Orphan Choir, comprised of 24 gifted and spirited teenagers, are winding up their 2024 tour across America singing and dancing to songs from their native Africa. This free concert is a gift to Westport from an anonymous benefactor, intended to expand our musical and cultural horizons. It features a performance of the Choir’s recorded collaboration with the jazz greats of the Amina Figarova Sextet performing the original "Suite For Africa” from her album of the same name (Amfi Records, 2024).
The Choir’s mission is “to use the unifying power of music to uplift every child, bring joy to all who listen, and inspire generosity to provide a complete education for vulnerable children.” Performances by the Choir fund the Liberian children’s education while developing their musical talents and teamwork.
This collaboration with Amina Figarova was inspired by her travels to Africa, and a subsequent fateful flight with her husband, flautist Bart Platteau, where she met students from the Matsiko World Orphan Choir on the plane. It touched Amina’s heart to connect with some of the talented students who were orphaned, in poverty or at-risk. Amina became determined to help these children who use music to create a positive future, and was inspired to compose and record a suite to showcase their talent.
The talent and exuberance of the Matsiko World Orphan Choir matches their ambition! In the United States, they have performed at the White House, House of Congress, Disneyland, Mount Rushmore, Google and Microsoft Corporate events and the Rose Bowl, to name a few. After Westport, notably, they are headed directly to Yale University and then in a couple of weeks, Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
This rare free concert in Westport promises to be an unforgettable, cultural delight for the whole family!
