Description

This interactive dance workshop is led by Jolyn Washington Walker, dancer and owner of African Expressions. Perfect for families with children ages 5 and up.

Sunday, March 2, 2025 at 2pm at the Weston History & Culture Center in Weston, CT.

This is NOT a drop-off program. Parents must stay with their children and are encouraged to participate.

Learn about West African dance with your family! Get ready to move those feet. Jolyn will teach traditional dance steps and share her knowledge about dances from the West African country of Ghana. Too shy to dance? No problem! You can participate by playing traditional instruments during the program. Wear comfortable clothing.

About Jolyn Walker: Jolyn is the cultural director for African American celebrations such as: Kwanzaa, Juneteenth and Black History Month and have shared at many libraries in Connecticut. Jolyn, a lifelong dancer, teaches classes and performs demonstrations throughout New England and the eastern coast of the United States. She taught traditional African Dance classes for fifteen years at Choate Rosemary Hall a private high school in Wallingford, Connecticut. Her African Dance education was acquired in the New York City Public School System, Lerocque Bey Dance School (NYC) and Yale University’s AfroAm Center and she continues to sharpen her skills by attending conferences across the country. Jolyn currently serves on the Board for the Sacred Dance Guild; she is also the Director for the Liturgical Dance Division of the CT State Baptist Convention. Jolyn served as Director for the National Liturgical Dance Network (CT Chapter) for five years. For Jolyn, sharing her cultural heritage is a way of life!
